Couples
Therapy
Relationships take work - whether it is a new relationship and you are trying to define what you both want, you are considering marriage/long-term commitment, children, or other major milestones, or you are about to be "empty nesters" and want to ensure you can can come back together after both being in the 'parent' role for so long. There is also a place for therapy if an affair took place. Marriages can be healed after an infidelity with both partners investing in the process to understand the underlying deeper needs which may not have been met.
Therapists use the Gottman Method as the foundation for relationship work. Couples therapy starts with a joint session where the therapist will get to know you as a couple, how the relationship developed, and what brought you both to therapy. A week or so later, both partners will have individual sessions with the therapist where they will get to know each of you as your own person in the relationship, and your views on how the relationship is going. Both partners will be asked to complete assessments, individually, before the treatment planning appointment. The treatment planning appointment brings both of you back with your therapist who will go over the strengths and challenge areas in your relationship, and will end with the three of you setting therapy goals, and the frequency of subsequent appointments.
All healthy, long-lasting relationships require intention and attention. Learning new, or reviewing communication strategies is important at all stages of relationships to ensure both partners feel validated, appreciated, and heard.
